On the days when he has no class and his father is out, Kise goes through his school books, copying everything down. If Kiyoshi catches him doing this, he'll tell him to do it somewhere else, and Ryouta will listen. Sometimes he won't go away until he sees Kiyoshi's face change, and he'll stop.
When Ryouta turns ten, he gets into trouble for using the wrong utensils. He steals them back and Kiyoshi says, "You're going to get me in trouble." He sounds disappointed but also angry, and Kise understands why. He knows he shouldn't use what his father gave him but it still hurts sometimes.
When he starts getting sick, Kiyoshi takes the opportunity to tell Ryouta that maybe it's time to leave. He doesn't want Ryouta to catch the same illness he does. Ryouta protests, saying that he wants to stay. But eventually he admits defeat. When Ryouta leaves, Kiyoshi cries.
When he wakes up the next morning, his throat feels like it's filled with sandpaper. He coughs, trying to clear his throat but nothing happens. He sits up slowly, looking around the room. It looks exactly the way he left it; the covers thrown over the pillows, the clothes strewn across the floor. It's almost as if Ryouta had never been here.
